Who we are
About Our Parish
Our Church's history, our parish family, and a word from our Vicar — at home in Melbourne.
Church History
The Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in India, earlier known as Syrian Orthodox Church (SOC), Jacobite Church, and Jacobite Christians, follows the Apostle St. Thomas tradition and continues with the ecclesial and theological legacy and primacy of the Throne of Antioch.
Our Patron
Our parish is dedicated to St Baselios Yeldho Bava, whose holy tomb rests at Mar Thoma Cheriyapally, Kothamangalam. We draw inspiration from his life of humility, prayer, and steadfast faith — striving to uphold his legacy by nurturing a Christ-centred community rooted in the traditions of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
A Family Built on Gratitude
With gratitude to Almighty God, we thank Him for His abundant blessings upon St Basil Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Melbourne. Through His grace, our parish has become a place where families gather to worship, grow in faith, and support one another as one Christian family.
As we continue our journey, we pray that God will strengthen our parish, guide our ministries, and help us serve future generations with love, unity, and compassion. May St Baselios Yeldho Bava continue to intercede for our church and all who worship here.
A Word From Our Vicar
Our Vicar shepherds the parish with deep devotion to the West Syriac liturgical tradition, guiding the congregation through the Holy Qurbana, the sacraments, and the pastoral life of the church — visiting the sick, counselling families, forming the young, and leading our community in prayer and worship week by week.
Apostolic Roots
We safeguard the sacred liturgical legacy, offering a direct spiritual connection to the centuries-old devotion of the early Church fathers.
Sacramental Life
Through the Holy Qurbana and the seasonal fasts, we invite believers into a transcendent, prayerful relationship with Christ.
Grace in Action
Faith manifests in love. Our parish extends compassionate support, charity, and fellowship to those in need across Melbourne.
